What is Yakshagana?
Yakshagana is a traditional theatre form that blends dance, music, dialogue, costume, makeup, and stage techniques. Originating from Karnataka, this centuries-old folk art brings ancient epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata to life in a dramatic, colorful, and musical performance.
History and Origins
Yakshagana evolved between the 11th and 16th centuries in coastal Karnataka. It is deeply influenced by temple rituals, folk stories, and classical music traditions. The word “Yakshagana” literally means “songs of the demi-gods.”
Styles of Yakshagana – Badagutittu and Thenkutittu
There are two main styles of Yakshagana:
- Badagutittu: Practiced in Uttara Kannada and Udupi districts. Known for its vibrant facial expressions and precise dialogue delivery.
- Thenkutittu: More popular in the South Canara region, characterized by smooth dance movements and rhythm.
